About this site

This website went online on April 1, 1996. It was one of the very first about Breaking, also known as Breakdancing, on the entire World Wide Web.

Other early websites about the dance, like “Cardboard Only” and “Dancer's Delight”, no longer exist. That makes this the oldest still-active website about Breaking.

How it started

Remy was studying chemistry at the University of Bern, where he could go online almost from the very beginning. When he checked the web in 1995, there was hardly any information about Breaking, and whenever you found something it was like a little sensation. After a few months of checking out everything, he felt the impulse to build a page of his own, and soon found out that it was quite creative work.

The more information about Breaking went online, the more emails came in with questions about the dance and about the scene in Europe. Instead of answering the same questions over and over again, he compiled everything on the site, and over the years tried to complete the topics more and more.

A meeting point for Europe

For a long time it was one of the very few Breaking websites based in Europe, and worldwide there were just a few. So a lot of emails came in about connections and about what was going on. The site also brought the crew together: the Japanese members first got to know the crew via the web in 1996, exchanging knowledge, ideas and histories by email before meeting at the 20th Rock Steady Crew Anniversary in New York City in 1997.

From about 1998 until 2000, before Battle of the Year got its own domain, the official Battle of the Year website was a subsection of this site, then at spartanic.ch.
